ISO 45001:2018

What is ISO 45001:2018?

ISO 45001:2018 dictates the steps for an occupational health and safety (OHSAS) management system, and lays out the plan for its use, this enables organizations to come out with safe and healthy workplaces by blocking work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OHSAS performance.

OHSAS ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001 are similar in regards to the occupational health and safety management. They both are applicable to all organizations that wish to implement, maintain and establish an OHSAS management system to improve occupational health and safety, eliminate hazards and reduce the risks involved in OHSAS (including system deficiencies), take advantage of OHSAS opportunities and address OHSAS management system nonconformities associated with its activities.

ISO 45001 Requirements

The implementation of ISO 45001 safety management system requires certain steps taken by the employers for the certification. These steps are:

  • Proper distribution of commitment, responsibilities and accountability to the top management leadership.
  • Top management developing, leading and promoting a culture in the organization that supports the intended outcomes of the OHSAS management system.
  • Proper and periodic consultation and participation of workers, and, where they exist, workers’ representatives in the organization.
  • Systematic allocation of the necessary resources for maintenance.
  • Implementation of OHSAS policies, which are compatible with the overall strategic objectives and direction of the organization.
  • Predefined processes for identifying hazards, controlling OHSAS risks and taking advantage of OHSAS opportunities.
  • Periodic performance evaluation and monitoring of the OHSAS management system to improve the OHSAS performance.
  • Predefined OHSAS objectives that align with the OHSAS policies and take into account the organization’s hazards, OHSAS risks and OHSAS opportunities.
  • Compliance with its legal requirements and other requirements.

ISO 45001 Training

ISO 45001:2018 standard helps an organization to achieve the intended outcomes defined by its OHSAS ISO 45001 safety management system. Consistent with the organization's OHSAS policy, the intended outcomes of an OHSAS management system include:

  • Continual improvement of OHSAS performance.
  • Fulfilment of legal requirements and other requirements.
  • Achievement of OHSAS objectives.

ISO 45001 Certification

ISO 45001 certified companies do not need to have specific criteria for the OHSAS performance, neither they need to prescribe to a fixed design or set of policy for its implementation.

The method that we at Samarth Consultants recommend is to implement the standard with the following steps:

Plan: Determine and assess OHSAS risks, OHSAS opportunities and other risks and other opportunities, establish OHSAS objectives and processes necessary to deliver results following the organization’s OHSAS policy.

Do: Implement the processes as planned

Check: Monitor and measure activities and processes concerning the OHSAS policy and OHSAS objectives, and report the results

Act: Take actions to continually improve the OHSAS performance to achieve the intended outcomes.
